POSITION DESCRIPTION
DIRECTOR FOR YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRIES

All Saints’ Episcopal Church; Glen Rock, New Jersey
May 2006

PREFACE AND POSITION SUMMARY

All Saints’ Episcopal Church is an open, welcoming, inclusive congregation in the bustling Bergen County suburbs of New York City. A growing congregation, All Saints’ has doubled our average Sunday attendance in the last three years by intentionally welcoming families of all kinds through our doors. The development of a successful Youth and Family Ministry has been crucial to our parish’s growth. With the help of a diocesan congregational development grant, All Saints’ has completely overhauled our programs and offerings for youth and families. The result has been considerable: our program has higher parent and student involvement than ever before, and we have the largest number of volunteers and lay leaders in the parish’s memory. All ministries at All Saints’ Episcopal Church (“ASC”) extend from the canonical responsibilities given to the Rector (Pastor), who, working with the Vestry, hold jointly a particular and unique role in supervising and directing the Mission, Vision, and Action of the parish.  All staff members and assisting clergy of the parish function under the direct supervision, authority, and guidance of the Rector. Our Director for Youth and Family Ministries is a part-time position (25 hours a week), with the direct responsibility of:
  1. continuing to grow, oversee and support the ministry as outlined in Position Responsibilities below, and
  2. leading a collaborative effort to produce a structure of lay leadership that will be responsible to the Rector and the Vestry and assume responsibility on behalf of the parish for the development, implementation and regular review of all aspects of the ministry for youth and families – see Appendix for key objectives.
In May 2006, there are 53 children registered in the nursery through 8th grade programs of this growing key ministry.  The program includes:
  • First Steps: Nursery program for infants and toddlers is provided year-round in specifically-equipped area of the Fellowship Hall during Sunday morning services and also during special liturgies or family-related activities.  The program is run as a parent cooperative with the assistance of a professional nursery caregiver.
  • Kids for Christ: All Saints’ primary Christian formation for children ages pre-school through 5th grade. Meets on Sundays during the school year (September-June) from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in the chapel building, with the children generally joining their parents in the church for Holy Communion. This program uses the Promiseland curriculum from Willow Creek Church, presenting the Biblical narrative in a high-energy large group gathering (e.g. skits, videos, mock game shows), followed by supplementary reinforcement and application of The Word in age-appropriate Small Groups (Pre-School; Kindergarten, Grades 1&2; and Grades 3-5). There are three components of leadership to this group: the shepherds (small group leaders that run the Sunday School classrooms), the large group leaders (which leads large group time), and the visual support team (which supports the large group time).
  • The Rocks:  For middle school (6,7 & 8th grades) on Sundays during the school year from 9:30–10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s room in the church building, led by a rotating team of four adults. The Rite 13 portion of ‘The Journey To Adulthood’ curriculum is the basis for the lesson plans, inviting the students to deeper theological reflection, Biblical exploration, and age-appropriate character development.
  • High School (9th/10th): High-level plans have been developed for a two year Journey to Adulthood (“J2A”) program commencing in September 2007, for 9th and 10th grade teens, using the J2A segment of the Journey to Adulthood curriculum.  Additionally, in the second year, the will students meet with the Parish Priest over the course of twelve concentrated meetings (one a month) in preparation for Confirmation.
  • High School (11th/12th): The Rector leads monthly activities and continuing Christian education for high school students, with assistance from and organization by members of the parish family.
The Director works on a part-time basis with the Rector, the Vestry, lay leaders, volunteer Shepherds (teachers), assistants, parents, and other staff members. The Director serves on the parish staff and reports directly to the Rector.  A performance review is conducted quarterly with the Rector and Wardens.
